Follow the step-by-step guide below to properly and safely cut down a small tree.
How To Properly Cut Down A Small Tree
Safety should always be your number one priority when approaching this DIY task. Have helpers on hand, if possible. Use this guide below.
Step 1. Gather Tools And Safety Equipment
- Always try to wear clothes that stay tight to your body for this task.
- Gather appropriate ear protection, as well.
- Make sure the chainsaw you are using is in good working condition.
- You should have experience using the chainsaw prior to cutting down this tree.
Step 2. Examine The Surrounding Area
- Start by determining which direction you’d like the tree to fall.
- Then figure out your cutting direction.
- Always call the tree professionals if the tree is located close to homes and/or power lines.
- Make sure you have a clear escape route if the task does not go as planned.
- Plan to escape in the opposite direction the tree is falling at a 45-degree angle.
Step 3. Cut A Diagonal Line
- Start by making a 70-degree cut in the side of the tree in the direction you’d like it to fall.
- Brace your left shoulder against the tree on your left side.
- Many chainsaws feature a sight that tells you the angle to cut.
- Make sure the first cut is about a quarter of the total width of the tree.
Step 4. Make A Relief Cut
- The relief cut you make should be horizontal at the deepest part of the previous cut.
- A triangle-shaped cut should then come out of the tree.
- This is done to encourage the tree to fall in your desired direction.
- DO NOT make any more cuts if this cut is not perfect.
- Contact the tree professionals if this is the case.
Step 5. Fell The Tree
- Proceed to this step ONLY if you are certain the cut is facing the correct direction.
- Felling the tree means you will move to the opposite side of the wedge you previously cut out.
- Begin this cut slightly higher than the previous horizontal cut.
- Saw enough to ultimately drive a wedge into the cut, but not the full way through.
- You’ll want the wedge in with enough room to move the chainsaw while still being able to refrain from touching the wedge.
- Leave about 10 percent of the center of the tree.
- This will help secure the tree on the stump.
- Gently push the tree or simply wait for it to fall on its own.
- Always keep your 45-degree angle escape plan top of mind.
